Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg’s Christmas markets are centered in its UNESCO-listed Old Town, where the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt in Domplatz plaza and Residenzplatz plaza dates back to the 15th century.
The markets are woven into a network of cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and historic squares, creating a romantic and intimate setting.
Across the Salzburg our tour will share with you:
-
Traditional wooden Christmas stalls set against baroque architecture
-
Regional foods and seasonal specialties
-
Choirs and brass ensembles performing throughout the Advent season
-
The Advent market at Hellbrunn Palace set within the palace grounds, where decorated trees, courtyards, and pathways create an elaborate festive layout.
-
We will share elements of the story behind The Sound of Music movie and show you where the real Von Trapp family were part of that broader WWII context.
Wolfgangsee – Austrian Alpine Lake Experience
Our tour includes a full day in the Wolfgangsee Alpine Lake Advent region, where Christmas markets are set across three lakeside villages—St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, and Strobl—each with its own setting and scale.
This region is among the most beautiful villages in Austria set between the mountains and the shoreline with seasonal lighting, nativity displays, and traditional stalls integrated into the landscape.
-
St. Wolfgang hosts the largest market, set directly on the lake with a floating illuminated lantern
-
St. Gilgen offers a smaller village market focused on regional crafts
-
Strobl features a traditional nativity-themed market with handcrafted displays
We will move between the villages as part of the experience, including time on the lake ferry, where the views of the surrounding mountains and shoreline markets are part of the day.
In St. Wolfgang, we also include access to the historic cogwheel railway on Schafberg, which operates special Advent services and provides elevated views over the lake and surrounding Alpine region.
Munich
Our tour includes time in Munich, Germany, where the Christmas markets are spread across the historic center and surrounding neighborhoods, each with a distinct Bavarian character.
We begin at the main market in Marienplatz, set in front of the town hall, then explore additional markets that highlight different aspects of the city’s traditions:
-
The central market at Marienplatz, known for its large Christmas tree and classic wooden stalls
-
Smaller neighborhood markets with regional Bavarian foods and specialties
-
The medieval-style market at Wittelsbacherplatz, with period-inspired vendors and traditional crafts
We'll move through these markets on foot, allowing time to experience the variety—food, handcrafted goods, and the social atmosphere that defines Munich during Advent.
Munich adds a different rhythm to the journey, with a stronger emphasis on local gathering places, hearty seasonal food, and a lively market culture that reflects Bavarian traditions.
How This Tour Works
Our Christmas markets tour is designed as a small-group (max. 15 people) guided European experience with a balance of structure and flexibility.
We handle the planning, logistics, and movement between destinations, while leaving space for you to explore, shop, and enjoy the markets at your own pace.
A defining part of the journey is how we travel between cities. We move through Austria and Bavaria by train—comfortable, safe, efficient, and central to the European travel experience. Stations are located in the heart of each city, and the journey itself becomes part of the trip: watching the landscape change, arriving directly into historic centers, and traveling without the stress of highways or airports.
Throughout the journey, travel is designed to be smooth and intuitive:
-
Train travel between Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich
-
Trams and local transportation within each destination
-
Centrally located, walkable hotels
-
Guided support for transitions, orientation, and key experiences
We coordinate each step—so you experience the ease of European travel without needing to navigate it on your own.
This approach allows you to experience Europe’s Christmas markets with both comfort and independence, while still having the structure and support of a fully guided tour.
